Scammers reuse the same five scripts. If what is happening to you matches one of these, stop sending money today.
The friendly stranger (“pig butchering”)
A wrong-number text, a dating app match, or a warm WhatsApp chat that slowly turns to money.
- 1They talk to you for days or weeks with no mention of money. They are friendly, patient and consistent.
- 2Eventually they mention a trading platform their 'uncle' or 'mentor' uses, and offer to show you.
- 3Your first small deposit shows a profit and you can withdraw it. That is the bait.
- 4You invest more. When you try to withdraw, there is suddenly a tax, fee, or 'account upgrade' to pay first.
The tell: You can see profits on a website, but withdrawing requires paying more money in.
Fake wallet or exchange support
You post a problem online, or search for a support number, and someone contacts you.
- 1They appear on Telegram, X, or in your inbox within minutes, using a real-looking logo.
- 2They ask you to 'validate', 'sync' or 'restore' your wallet.
- 3The link opens a page asking for your 12 or 24 words.
The tell: Any request for your seed phrase, private key, or remote access to your screen.
Recovery scams (the second hit)
After you have already lost money, someone offers to get it back.
- 1They claim to be a blockchain investigator, a lawyer, or a government-linked recovery agency.
- 2They show a dashboard 'tracing' your funds and say recovery is possible.
- 3They ask for an upfront fee, then another, then vanish.
The tell: Anyone charging upfront to recover crypto. Real recovery goes through police and courts, not a fee.
Celebrity giveaways and AI deepfakes
A video of a famous investor or news anchor promoting a 'doubling' event or new platform.
- 1The video is AI-generated or clipped from a real interview.
- 2You are told to send crypto to an address and receive double back, or to register on a platform.
- 3Nothing comes back.
The tell: Send money to get more money back. This has never once been real.
Cloud mining and 'staking' apps
An app or site promising daily returns of 1-3% for parking your coins.
- 1Early payouts are funded by new depositors, not by mining or staking.
- 2You are rewarded for recruiting friends and family.
- 3Withdrawals slow down, then stop.
The tell: Fixed daily percentages, referral bonuses, and a leaderboard.
